A little over two years ago my pal and fellow yoga teacher Kathy Dodd and I started offering weekend yoga retreats in the mountains west of Calgary. This year, after our fifth successful retreat we decided to call ourselves,
What Kathy and I are passionate about:
Yoga. The poses, the breathing, the meditation, the philosophy. Yoga rocks our world.
Self care. We love to help women take care of their bodies from a place of love, tenderness and respect.
Creating retreat experiences that include joy, pleasure and fun!
We have designed these retreats with the both the brand new beginner yogi as well as the more experienced yogi in mind.
Even if you have never stepped inside a yoga studio, you can do this! Here is what one of our repeat participants has to say,
“Being my first experience to yoga, I was quite apprehensive about it. I had bowed to peer pressure and agreed to come. It completely surpassed my expectations. Jo and Kathy were amazing. It ended up being the perfect way to introduce yourself to yoga with the two instructors. They were so wonderful and welcoming. I was afraid I would feel like I was holding things up but they never let that happen. Would go again!”
What Kathy and I are committed to:
Loving and personal attention in every yoga class
Exceptional cuisine, with an emphasis on local, healthy, delicious
Incredible hospitality. We want you to feel completely cared for.

Yoga by the Beach
Akumal Mexico January 23 – 30, 2015
(south of Cancun on the Caribbean side of Mexico)
No spaces available for this retreat
Akumal (“Place of the Turtle” in Maya) is a wonderful eco-village located about 25 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen on the Riviera Maya. It was originallyestablished 50 years ago as a haven for Scuba Divers. It is still a thriving diving community with great access to the Caribbean reef as well as the cenotes and cave systems in the jungle close by.
Another popular Akumal activity is snorkeling—the area is one of the very best snorkeling spots on the coast with it’s calm waters and large population of resident sea turtles. Even if you are not a diver or snorkeler, Akumal proper offers 2 wonderful beaches.
We are staying in our own private villa so we have the place to ourselves, and our own Chef Liz will be on hand to feed you delicious, healthy and substantial meals.
A typical day would include a healthy breakfast, then a 9 – 11 am yoga practice outside (shaded from the sun on the terrace) which will include meditation, breath work and the yoga you love with kathy and jo. Then you can linger for lunch at noon and have the rest of the day to explore, snorkel, swim, bike ride, read, lie on the beach or pool side or snooze in the hammocks.
We will gather again before dinner for a 5-6pm restorative yoga practice and then share dinner made especially for us in our open dining room. After dinner, you might move up to the roof top patio to watch the stars and maybe enjoy a homemade margarita or hit the sack early and enjoy the spectacular sunrise the next morning on that same roof top patio.
This is going to be a very special retreat, with all the luxury of a hotel, but with the intimacy of a private residence. It will be easy like an all inclusive vacation without the impersonal nature of buffets and wristbands. The ease of the pool and the beach right there, the food freshly cooked, and a chance to experience the local culture.
The town of Akumal is still small and without large hotel chains, and you can walk or bike everywhere. Swimming with the turtles is world famous, as is the white sand and calm waters of the Caribbean. You know you want to join us – take the leap and come!
These retreats are suitable for both the very beginner and the seasoned yogi.
$2039 / per person double occupancy
$2,750 single occupancy
includes 7 nights accommodations, all meals, all yoga practices, transfers.
Does not include airfare or insurance.
$500 deposit will secure your spot.
Full amount due October 18, 2014.
Why come on retreat? Here's what our last group had to say from our January 2014 retreat:
(the following words were received anonymously from a post retreat survey)
"Further confirmed my belief that women over the age of 40 must connect with other women."
"The entire weekend certainly lived up to my vision of what a yoga retreat should be"
"Since this was my first yoga retreat, I have nothing to compare it with. I knew there would be lots of yoga but I was pleased that the yoga was mixed with some meditation. I also liked having a long resting pose at the end of each practice. There was joy and warmth woven through our entire weekend, from the hotel staff to the local artisans and, certainly, from Kathy & Jo! What a lovely little getaway with my good friend!"
"It was an amazing experience and I loved it. I hope to come again in May."
"I feel warm and happy just thinking about it. It was a wonderful experience of friendship and mother/daughter connection."
"After all these years I still learned that my hand placement for down dog needed some tweaking still! also was able to ease into the assisted inversion with more grace & strength than in past. Yeah!"
"Spectacular weekend. a highlight of 2014. very, very grateful to have kathy & jo in my life."
"My mom and I attended the Bliss Retreat in Field, BC. It was a wonderful, bonding experience in a beautiful setting. We would recommend this type of weekend for adult mothers and daughters who practise yoga." Melanie
"I have a feeling my experience may have been life-changing actually. By continuing to attend to my body and my breath I think I may have shifted some perceptions and emotional 'stuff' that may free me up to move forward with my life more fully. I guess time will tell."
